How to Format, Validate and Minify JSON

A response from an API is often compressed into a single line. You may need to read it, fix a syntax problem, or make it smaller before transferring it. These are three different jobs, and knowing which one you need saves time.

1. Make a JSON response readable

Suppose an API returns a compact object for a small order:

{"orderId":1042,"items":[{"sku":"MUG-01","qty":2}],"paid":true}

Paste it into Vyblet JSON Formatter and choose Format. Indentation separates objects, arrays and fields so you can visually confirm that items contains one object and paid is a Boolean—not a string.

Formatting changes whitespace, not the underlying data. It will not rearrange your keys, correct wrong values or fix invalid syntax.

2. Validate before you send or save

JSON has stricter rules than a JavaScript object literal. Keys and string values require double quotes, and a comma cannot appear after the last entry. For instance:

{
  "name": "Ada",
  "active": true,
}

This is invalid JSON because of the comma after true. Remove it, then click Validate. In Vyblet, validation checks syntax in the browser and reports a parser error when a problem remains. It does not check whether a field such as active is the correct type for your API; that requires a schema or application-specific rules.

3. Minify only when it helps

Choose Minify to remove formatting whitespace. This can be useful for a configuration value, request payload or test fixture. Keep a pretty-printed copy while debugging: the small number of bytes saved in ordinary application JSON is rarely worth losing readability in working documents.

A practical debugging checklist

  1. Copy the response from the network inspector, without the HTTP headers.
  2. Paste it into the input box; try Validate first.
  3. If valid, select Format and inspect the nesting.
  4. Fix the original source of incorrect values; a formatter cannot correct business logic.
  5. Copy the result for your notes, or select Minify if compact output is actually required.

Privacy tip: Avoid pasting passwords, tokens or production customer records into any unnecessary tool. Vyblet processes the JSON locally in your browser, but minimizing exposure remains a good habit.

Frequently asked questions

Can a formatter repair broken JSON?

No. Vyblet highlights parse errors so you can correct the input. It does not invent missing quotes, commas or values.

Why does a number look different after formatting?

Vyblet uses JavaScript's JSON parser and serializer. Large numbers can lose precision and number notation can change. Use a precision-aware workflow for financial or very large integer data.

Is JSON the same as JavaScript?

No. They share similar syntax, but JSON excludes comments, trailing commas, undefined values, functions and single-quoted strings.
