How to Build a Five-Color Palette for a Website

Five attractive colors are not automatically a usable design system. The real challenge is deciding which shade belongs on the background, which draws attention to a button, and which remains readable as text.

1. Start with a purpose, not a random swatch

Think about the interface before selecting colors. A productivity tool might need a calm surface and one unmistakable action color; an illustration portfolio can be brighter. Open the Vyblet Color Palette Generator and press New palette until you find a direction that suits the project.

The generator produces five related HEX colors. Click a code to copy it, or use Copy all HEX to save the group.

2. Lock a favorite color and explore around it

If a purple feels right for your primary button, click its lock icon. Generate again: that locked swatch stays while the other four change. This is more focused than restarting from scratch because the design's anchor color remains consistent.

Try this workflow: lock your brand color, choose a light background candidate, reserve a warm or bright accent for small highlights, and avoid using five saturated colors at equal strength.

3. Assign color roles

RoleWhat it doesUsage idea
BackgroundHolds most of the pageSoft neutral or light tint
SurfaceSeparates cards from the pageSubtle contrasting shade
PrimaryCalls attention to actionsButtons and active tabs
AccentAdds personalityBadges and illustrations
TextCommunicates contentDark or light readable tone

4. Check contrast before shipping

A palette generator creates inspiration, not a certified accessible combination. Check every foreground-and-background pair. WCAG AA commonly requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal-sized text and 3:1 for large text; interface components also have relevant non-text contrast requirements. Test actual UI states, including buttons, form borders, focus rings and disabled controls.

Example: a cheerful task dashboard

Use a near-white canvas, dark charcoal text, a medium purple for important actions, a soft lavender for card backgrounds and a lime accent sparingly for positive highlights. The exact HEX codes matter less than preserving readable contrast and consistent roles throughout the product.

Before publishing: test the palette in light and dark themes, on mobile screens, and with color-vision simulations. Never communicate an error or success using color alone.

Frequently asked questions

Does a matching palette guarantee accessible contrast?

No. Harmony and contrast are different goals. Validate each real text/background combination against the relevant accessibility criteria.

What does locking a color do?

It keeps that one HEX value unchanged when you generate the next palette; other unlocked swatches are replaced.

Can I use the HEX values in CSS?

Yes. Paste them into CSS color properties or variables, such as --brand: #7056F7;. Review the actual colors in context.
